Spring Fun at Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal

The spectacular Studley Royal water garden in North Yorkshire is dotted with follies, fanciful structures designed to catch the eye and entertain 18th century guests in the garden. As tastes and fashions in garden design changed over the centuries, the original follies were transformed and some were lost from the landscape.

Since 2015 the folly! art programme has celebrated the playful, whimsical style of the water garden, featuring contemporary artworks inside the follies. Now it returns for a third year, bigger than ever. For the first time the artworks move outdoors to delight and surprise visitors of all ages to the World Heritage Site.
Three internationally recognised artists have been commissioned to design new art works, or modern day follies, to be installed where originals have disappeared from the water garden.

These artists include Charles Holland, who has previously worked with Grayson Perry, Lucy Orta and Fleafolly. A fourth installation has been designed by a local school pupil following a county wide competition which saw 50 schools from North and West Yorkshire submitting entries.
