York MinsterYork Minster

From the world's greatest treasures to the smallest curiosities, York Minster is one of the world's most magnificent cathedrals, with foundations rooted in the nation's earliest history. Explore a masterpiece in stained glass and stone, its vast spaces alive with the sanctity and tradition of worship and heavenly music. Or quiet corners revealing unexpected stories and human inspiration.

New – The Orb at York Minster
A Dome of Discovery, revealing world-class masterpieces in stained glass.

Enter the Orb, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see, at close range, some of the world’s most important art. Within this elliptical treasure-house of stained glass you will discover a forgotten artist for the first time – England’s lost Vermeer or Michelangelo. Explore new interactive galleries illustrating the epic stories and craftsmanship of the magnificent Great East End, all part of the York Minster Revealed project.

The York Minster Revealed project is a five-year project generously supported by a £10.5m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), scheduled for completion in early summer 2016. It is the largest restoration and conservation project of its kind in the UK.

New – Coming Early Summer 2013 – Revealing York Minster in the Undercroft

Within underground chambers beneath York Minster, dynamic new audiovisual and interactive galleries will reveal the significance behind the cathedral’s most treasured artefacts as never before, in an inspirational two thousand-year journey.

Visit our website for more information.

From 1 May 2012 - April 2013, the main visitor entrance to York Minster will be temporarily located at the West End, alongside Duncombe Place and Dean's Park. The relocation is necessary during construction work at the South entrance for the York Minster Revealed project. The work will improve access and the visitor welcome by creating a Piazza with integrated ramps and new ticketing facilities.

Listed as one of the History and Heritage Experiences in Visit England's '101 things to do before you go abroad.'

Recommended by Wallace & Gromit as one of the 'Cracking things to see and do.'
