York Festival of Ideas

York Festival of Ideas

York Festival of Ideas returns from 6 to 18 June with an exciting and diverse mix of events under the banner of The Story of Things: A celebration of human ingenuity and invention.

Offering more than 150 free events, this year’s packed programme promises something for everyone, with talks, exhibitions, theatre, music, films, guided walks, family activities, workshops and much more. Topics covered range from cycling to health, Jane Austen to Donald Trump, and science to creative writing.

Headline speakers include Peter Lord, Co-founder and Creative Director of Academy Award® winning studio Aardman; Reverend Richard Coles, cleric, broadcaster and former Communard; Harriet Harman MP; Ed Balls, former Shadow Chancellor and star of Strictly Come Dancing 2016; Michael Wood, historian and broadcaster; Michael Rosen, novelist and poet; and Carla Valentine, mortician and author.

Special Focus Days tackle issues that affect us all, such as the future of work and democracy, while the French Embassy and the Institut français du Royaume-Uni launch an exciting new collaboration, ‘A Date with History’.

The Festival opening night, which features talks by New Generation Thinkers and music by The 24, will be recorded by BBC Radio 3 for broadcast in July.
