Treasurer's House, Chris Lacey

Details

When visiting Treasurer's House, find out about fascinating wealthy Yorkshireman, Frank Green, as you wander round his former home. This was the first house to be donated to the National Trust complete with its contents. The remarkable collection includes antique furniture, ceramics, textiles and paintings from a 300-year period.

Tucked behind York Minster, all is not as it first appears. At one time divided into three houses, in the late 1900s, Frank Green created his version of a historic house to showcase his important collection. See both sides of the story as he demolished parts of the house not to his liking, yet transformed a house of declining fortunes into a handsome property, with lavish interiors grand enough to entertain the future King, Edward VII.

Relax in the award winning walled garden or stop off for hot drinks and home cooked food in the newly refurbished Below Stairs Café – both are free to enter on open days. Family friendly trails and garden games are available during the school holidays. Step around the corner to the large city centre shop on Goodramgate for the full range of shops.

Have a look at the current exhibition as you wander - Demolition and Restoration. Not all houses were as fortunate as Treasurer's. Discover the fate of some of the lost houses of Yorkshire and see how Frank Green made changes to create the house you see today.

Fancy a tour? Head down to the cellars to see the archaeology below your feet and the spot where Harry Martindale saw Roman ghosts. Tours don't run on Wednesdays and on occasion other days, call ahead to avoid disappointment. Small charge for none members. Spaces limited so arrive early.

Why not stay a bit longer? Check out the self-catered holiday accommodation at Minstergate just around the corner from Treasurer’s House, which the former owner Frank Green saved from being demolished. Situated in a beautiful timber-framed historic building in the heart of York, the accommodation has on-the-doorstep access to all of York’s main attractions.
