Our team are busy planning a year of transformative art and culture for 2017. This is the story so far.
Hull was announced the winner of UK City of Culture 2017 in 2013. The award is given every four years to a city that demonstrates the belief in the transformational power of culture.
To deliver on this promise, Hull City Council set up Hull UK City of Culture 2017 as an independent company and charitable trust. The team are working hard to plan and deliver 365 days of transformative cultural activity in 2017.
The arts and cultural programme for the year will celebrate the unique character of the city, its people, history and geography. In 2017, the programme will run from 1 Jan to 31 Dec. This year will be split into four seasons, each with something distinctive, intriguing and created to challenge and thrill.
We will work with the artists of Hull and celebrate the culture of the city and its place in the wider cultural offer of the North, and make Hull a cultural destination for must-see events. Young people are at the heart of the programme – it is this group who will inherit the longer-term benefits as a result of our focus around Education and Skills. We will give every young person of school age the opportunity to participate in 2017 as well as engage 4,000 volunteers to help deliver the year.
Hull 2017 are seeking partnerships with public and private funders, trusts and foundations, businesses and individuals to help us to achieve our fundraising target of at least £18million and to deliver a transformational year in 2017.
Working with businesses and organisations who want to help us, we will make Hull a better place for the people who live and work here, in particular those who have a presence in Hull or a connection to the city, and an interest in being here for the long haul.
SEASON ONE: MADE IN HULL
Jan – Mar
In this opening season, we welcome the world to Hull.
We’ll challenge preconceptions and show people what Hull is really made of and the many incredible things Hull has made for the world. From art to industry, Hull has long inspired great people and great ideas.
The spirit, the stories, the talent of this city will all be evident in our first season. We’ll share with everyone what the people of Hull have known all along – that this city has contributed enormously to ideas that have changed and enriched the world.
SEASON TWO: ROOTS AND ROUTES
Apr – Jun
Hull is a gateway to Europe, a city connected to a globalised, digital world. This is a place of migration and transitions; like the tidal movements that govern its rivers, it is in constant flux, often buffeted by outside influences beyond its control.
Where paths cross and journeys begin, this season will explore Hull’s unique place in a constantly changing world. With a distinctly international flavour, new partnerships and collaborations will form as Hull takes its place at the centre of UK culture.
SEASON THREE: FREEDOM
Jul – Sep
The city enters its summer season, packed full of festivals and events that celebrate Hull’s rebellious streak and its freedom of thought, unbound by convention.
Our third season not only explores the pivotal role Hull played in the emancipation movement, as it helped to ignite the still unfinished global journey towards equality and social justice for all, but will also look at broader interpretations of freedom as a platform to create and debate, share and enjoy, reflect and reimagine.
SEASON FOUR: TELL THE WORLD
Oct – Dec
As the year draws to a close, we’ll start looking to the future and exploring what’s next.
We will celebrate the qualities that made Hull stand apart in an unforgettable year. Our sense of independence, our individuality, integrity and sense of humour.
We’ll look at how Hull is redefining itself as a key city within the North; a place reborn, with the voice and confidence of a city on the up.
The story starts here. Who knows where it will end?
