York Residents Festival Line Up Announced

07/01/2011

York's residents are in for a real treat at this year's annual Residents Festival; take a rare peak inside Joseph Rowntree's home, see behind the scenes of York Minster's Bell Tower, or take a guided walk of the Roman legionary fortress of York. With over a hundred free and discounted tours and visitor attractions on offer, Visit York will this week launch a fantastic line up for its 15th annual Residents Festival. Sponsored by CPP and supported by the City of York council, the festival will run from 29th January to 4th February and has been extended into a week-long event with more businesses involved than ever before.

New offers at York Minister have been added, including a behind the scenes tour of the Bell Tower by the Minister Bell Ringers. New too is the rare chance to visit a major Rowntree home in York built by Joseph Rowntree Senior in 1920 (*note no regrettably no disabled access to this house). If your passion is live music, then the Minister FM road show will be providing a mixture of music and entertainment including giveaways, competitions and fun games for all the family to enjoy.

Visit York's annual festival attracts up to 20,000 York residents and is a thank you to the residents of York for the warm welcome they give to York's seven million annual visitors. Gillian Cruddas MBE, Chief Executive of Visit York, said, ‘Every year we aim to make the Residents Festival bigger and better. We're delighted so many of York's attractions, restaurants and shops are getting involved. The welcome residents give to York's visitors is vitally important for the tourism economy and this is our way of saying thank you for the very important role residents play.'

Just some of the attractions opening their doors free to residents over the festival include; the Yorkshire Museum, York Art Gallery, Barley Hall, the National Railway Museum, DIG, the Jorvik Centre, York Dungeon, York Army Museum, and the Richard III Museum. Outside the city with free admission over the weekend Castle Howard is offering exhilarating walks in the grounds of this wonderful estate and Beningbrough Hall hopes to entice visitors to its National Portrait Galleries. For food lovers a range of restaurant deals are on offer and for a spot of pampering the Cedar Court Hotel is offering 20% off all pre booked spa treatments.

To celebrate fifteen years of the Residents Festival Visit York has also launched a ‘My View of York' photography competition. This gives residents the chance to put their photography skills to the test and capture their own unique view of this beautiful historic city. The competition is split into a 16 and under category and over 16's. The prize for the under 16's is a VIP day out at York's National Railway Museum and for the over 16's two VIP tickets for the North York Moors Pullman Dining Train.

Pre-booking is required for some of the attractions and guided tours, details of which can be found on the Visit York website at www.visityork.org or by picking up a Residents Festival leaflet from the Visit York Information Centre at 1 Museum Street. Residents need a valid YORKCard to gain admission at each participating venue. The YORKCard is currently available free of charge to residents living within the City of York Council area from any City of York library. A York Residents Festival information point will be located on Parliament Street from Saturday 29th to Sunday 30th January 2011. ENDS
