www.visityork.org Scoops Best Travel Website

Visit York’s website www.visityork.org has scooped the title of ‘Best Travel Website’ at the Group Leisure Awards, a prestigious tourism industry awards ceremony, held at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole last night (Wednesday 18 September). The awards are voted for by organisers of group travel.

Hosted by Group Leisure Magazine, the awards ceremony is the highlight of the year for some of the top names group travel. With 21 awards in total, over 300 people attended the ceremony, which took place on the first night of the Group Leisure & Travel Trade Show.

Awards were presented by Group Leisure Magazine Editor Rob Yandell, alongside special guest presenter, former England rugby international and television presenter, Martin Bayfield. York’s flagship tourism website www.visityork.org was one of four finalists, beating off competition from www.londonandpartners.com and www.visitengland.com and www.GroupAccommodation.com.

Gillian Cruddas MBE, Chief Executive of Visit York, said ‘We’re delighted to be awarded Best Travel Website. Since re-launching our website a year ago, our aim has been to push the boundaries of how we promote our city digitally. We pride ourselves on our service for groups coming into York. Groups tourism generates in excess of £25 million annual spend in York, so ensuring we look after group organisers is crucial in boosting our healthy tourism economy.’

Rob Yandell, Managing Editor of Group Leisure, said ‘With more group organisers going online to find ideas and help for their trips and breaks, it’s now even more vital that websites are fresh, easy to navigate and inspiring. With so much competition, it’s a real testament to the team at Visit York that its website has been voted best by Group Leisure readers this year.’

Visityork.org was newly launched in November 2012 and generates over 2 million unique visits annually. The new website introduced a number of enhanced features, which included a revamp of its four microsites, which includes groupvisityork.com. As a result, Visit York saw a 57% increase in group travel enquiries in the six months following the re-launch.

Groups visiting York include everything from sports clubs and societies, to reunion groups, touring choirs and musicians to social get-togethers.

Visit York offers a free accommodation booking service, itinerary planning advice and a one-stop information point – as well as a website full of special offers and group travel news at http://www.visityork.org/groups.aspx. Email groups@visityork.org or telephone 01904 550080 for more information.
