Steam legend returns for 2011
07/12/2010
Groups looking for a perfect day out in 2011 need look no further than the award-winning National Railway Museum (NRM) in York. With highlights including the return of Flying Scotsman, a Japan Festival and a new art gallery opening, group organisers are sure to find something to suit their tours. In April, visitors can help the Museum mark the 10th anniversary of welcoming the Japanese bullet train into the National Collection by taking part in its Japan Festival. Visitors will be able to experience a touch of the Orient with free music and martial arts performances live every day during the Easter holidays (9-24 April). Hands on workshops will allow visitors to make their own origami bullet train while others enjoy a rare opportunity to access the cab of the iconic Shinkansen - the only bullet train outside Japan.
Then in May, following a meticulous restoration by the NRM's workshop team, Flying Scotsman will be on display in the National Railway Museum's Great Hall. From 28 to 30 May 2011, visitors will be able to take part in range of activities, workshops, talks and tours to help welcome home the iconic locomotive.
Helen Ashby, Head of Knowledge and Collections at the NRM, said: "Although Flying Scotsman won't be painted by May, there is so much anticipation surrounding the return of No 4472 that we couldn't resist giving the public the opportunity to see her looking like a complete steam engine as soon as possible. "
Although Flying Scotsman will only be able to be seen in grey primer whilst on display in May, the loco's adoring public won't need to wait long too see her in her beautiful apple green livery. The NRM is planning a spectacular unveiling of the steam legend in all her glory during the summer before she begins her operating schedule on the mainline. The exact date is yet to be confirmed, but announcements will be made on http://www.flyingscotsman.org.uk/ in the coming months.
Later in the summer, visitors will be able to enjoy the National Railway Museum's new art gallery. Funded by The Foundation for Sport and the Arts, the brand new exhibition space will enjoy an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions showcasing the Museum's unseen art collection and art works from across the world, inspired by the railways. The National Railway Museum's vast art collection comprises 7000 posters, 3061 prints and engravings and 1049 Paintings.
Helen Ashby added: "The NRM is perfect for any type of group visit whether you are a large coach party, a special interest group or looking for a day out for a social get-together. We will look after your every requirement from the moment you book to when you leave. I would recommend pre-booking your next group visit as it allows you to secure your coach parking space and entitles your group to lots of special offer vouchers including 2 for 1 on the Road Train, half price Simulator rides, 10% off in the shop as well as a free lunch for the Coach Driver."
