Raring to go "Wild About Wood"!

The archers are stringing their bows, the falcons are fluffing their feathers, the coracle maker is checking he's packed enough paddles and the mad mollusc man is sorting out his snails! Everyone at The Arboretum Trust, Kew at Castle Howard is busy putting the final touches to preparations for the Wild About Wood Festival, and is excited about welcoming visitors to this annual fundraising celebration of "all things wood".

With something on offer for all the family the festival promises to be bigger and better than ever. For the more intrepid visitor there's the opportunity to paddle a coracle on the arboretum's lake, unleash that inner Robin Hood on the archery range, or get a bird's eye view of things and have a go at tree-climbing.

There are fascinating demonstrations of traditional woodcrafts including pole lathe turning, heavy horse logging, willow weaving, chainsaw sculpting, furniture making, wood carving and charcoal burning.  Meet a hawk or falcon - or even hold one - before they then take to the skies in a stunning daily display. Enjoy a forest fairytale or take a free mini-tour of the arboretum which will offer a glimpse of the beauty and ecological importance of this very special place.

The Discovery Zone is dedicated to our younger visitors and is twice the size it was last year! Investigating the inhabitants of the arboretum lake, learning about building with oak, exploring the world of the tree beasts, practicing bushcraft skills and "explorienteering" are amongst the many free activities on offer.

The Branching Out exhibition showcases branches from right here in the arboretum that have been transformed into art by celebrities, master craftspeople, musicians, sporting personalities and many more. Contributions from Joanna Lumley, Matthew Pinsent, Jon Snow , Dame Janet Baker, David Gilmour and others will be on display prior to being auctioned in aid of The Arboretum Trust.

Traditional English musicians will entertain the crowds throughout the weekend, and there's a delicious variety of locally sourced food and drink to enjoy - everything from juicy venison burgers to delectable cakes to luscious strawberries and cream. It's a little early for Christmas shopping, but you're sure to find something to tempt you to make a purchase amongst the dozens of arts and crafts stalls!
