Issued by Great Potential

An annual Pancake Race is being revived this year at Bedern Hall in the centre of York at 12noon on Shrove Tuesday, 8th March 2011.  Contestants from hotels, tourism businesses and restaurants in the city will race to win a ‘coveted golden frying pan' and a prize lunch.

Participants will gather at 12noon outside the National Trust shop at Goodramgate and the race will start under the arched entrance to Bedern opposite. The finish line will be at Bedern Hall and the Sheriff of York has agreed to attend and present the trophy to the winner.

A new way to lunch will be launched on the day, called ‘Your Local Lunch', which provides the opportunity to enjoy fresh local food with friends and family over lunchtime. This is a monthly lunch club serving local produce, fairly priced and open to all.

Roger Lee of Time and Place Catering based at Bedern Hall said "There was a tradition for the hotels and restaurateurs in York to stage an annual pancake relay race along Tadcaster Road but it disappeared for various reasons at the end of the 1990's. This is a revival of that tradition and in the City centre it will provide some fun for both contestants and onlookers in a safe environment."

Prospective regular visitors to Bedern Hall can register for membership of the Your Local Lunch club initiative and can also follow on Facebook and Twitter where regular updates of new dishes and ingredients will be posted.

"This is also Fair Trade Fortnight and Your Local Lunch is an initiative that supports the principles and practice of using fair trade produce wherever possible combined with local ingredients" added Mr Lee.
