Fountains by Floodlight
22/09/2010
Illuminating Fountains Abbey is a tradition the National Trust will be upholding this October when the 12th century ruins are floodlit to reveal the splendour of the Abbey in a whole new light. And this year the Trust are offering visitors the chance to enter the grounds for half the price. From 5.30pm to 10pm on Saturdays 2, 9, 16 and 23 October Fountains Abbey and Fountains Hall will be transformed; giving people the opportunity to discover the unique peace and tranquillity of the floodlit ruins.
There's something for all the family to enjoy this year. Children can follow the mysterious monk around the dark nooks and crevices of the Abbey on a tour at 6pm. And for those wanting to learn more about the history of the Abbey and monks who lived at Fountains, guided tours will take place at 6.30pm and 7pm.
The estate will be welcoming choirs from across Yorkshire and the North East, including the Newcastle Bach Choir and the Boroughbridge Community Choir, to perform in the Abbey cellarium each week from 8pm until 9pm.
For those simply wanting to soak up the magical atmosphere, gentle Gregorian chant will be resounding though the ruins throughout the evening.
Visitors will be able to enjoy tucking into delicious hot pork sandwiches from the Hog Roast, available from 6pm to 9pm, and participate in some late night shopping at the Visitor Centre Gift Shop, open until 9pm. Fountains restaurant will also be open until 6pm.
General Manager, Chris Fowler, said:
"Floodlighting the abbey is something I look forward to each year. You can't beat the experience of wandering through the breathtaking ruins on a crisp autumn evening with the sound of the haunting Gregorian chant all around."
