A Yorkshire tourist attraction is offering free entry to mums who fit the bill of a female Gladiator.

The York Dungeon is a appealing for kids who think their Mum can be as scary as a Gladiator to come to the Dungeon this Bank Holiday weekend.

The offer comes as the result of Dungeon research for its new Gladiators of York feature launched earlier this year.

Research for the show, which brings the ancient Roman Gladiator arena alive for visitors in grisly detail, showed there were female Gladiators in ancient Rome.

Contesting Mums will be tried by a Dungeon Gladiator at the entrance of the scary attraction to decide if they qualify for free entry.

Tasks will include shouting as loud as possible to see if the Mum in question can battle cry like a Gladiator whilst holding a Gladiator sword and shield to strike a battle pose.

York Dungeon Manager Helen Douglas said: "I think it's fair to say a lot of people hear ‘Gladiator' and think big strapping males like Russell Crowe in the Gladiator film, I know we did.

"But research for our new Gladiator show revealed a lot of surprising Gladiator facts, including that there were female Gladiators in ancient Rome.

"The mum Gladiator trials should be a lot of fun for children nominating their own mothers, but will also give children the opportunity to learn the surprising hidden secrets of the ancient Roman Gladiators with our new Gladiator show."

Mums wanting to take part in the Gladiator trials must be nominated by their children at the York Dungeon entrance between 28th and 30th May and be prepared to undertake Gladiator trial tasks as set by the Dungeon actor on the entrance.
