Love food hate waste join up with Food and Drink Festival

27/07/2011

York and North Yorkshire's ‘Love Food Hate Waste' campaign is teaming up with York Food and Drink Festival to provide a delicious day dedicated to eating and living sustainably, on 23 September.

The event will be held in St Sampson's Square from 10.30am and will feature inspirational cookery demonstrations from talented local chefs, hands-on workshops where visitors can try their hand at a variety of activities, and a range of information stands.

Activities will include making chutney and preserves from fallen fruit or learning how to make the most of your cupboard essentials. York Edible schools project (YES) will also be on hand with students from local schools who have been growing their own produce all year, turning it in to fabulous dishes throughout the day.

Michael Hjort, director of York Food and Drink Festival, said: "Sustainability is a key aspect of York Food Festival, promoting Yorkshire produce and therby cutting down food miles and helping the environment. This day, in particular, sees Love Food Hate Waste deliver the educational aspect of ‘how to cut down your food bills by making use of leftovers."

A Sustainable Street Party will be held in the Fountain Cafe in Parliament Street from 5.30pm on the same day. The street party is open to everybody and is free of charge. Tickets to the ‘optional meal' cost £5 and are on sale now online at www.yorkfoodfestival.com/festival.php?day=8 .or by calling 01904 466687.

Anyone wanting to attend will be able to pre-book a ticket to the ‘optional' meal. The meal will be served to around 200 guests, will demonstrate the staggering amount of food an average family throws away every six months, contributing to landfill and climate change. Stalls and information will be available for guests to browse to find out more about the exciting projects happening in York and how they can get involved in making York a more sustainable city to live in.

Entertainment will be provided to ensure the party goes off with a bang.
