Park & Raid! Wanna-be Vikings to swap longships for long buses during JORVIK Viking Festival

20 – 26 February 2017

When the Vikings arrived on our shores, it was thanks to the wind in their sails and the power of their rowing that they were able to get to the heart of the city, but visitors to this year’s JORVIK Viking Festival will have a much easier access thanks to a partnership with First York, which is inviting Norse fans to ‘Park & Raid’ into York during the week of the Festival (20 – 26 February).

With this year’s Festival Finale – Bloodaxe’s Last Stand on the evening of Saturday 25 February – taking place in a new venue at Rawcliffe Country Park, Rawcliffe Bar Park & Ride is the ideal way of getting to and from the finale. Extra services have been laid on at 8.10pm and 8.30pm on Saturday evening to accommodate those wishing to get from the park & ride site and back into the city centre from the event, as well as 1000 free parking spaces for those driving specifically for the “swords, son-et-lumière” which is a highlight of York’s event calendar.

“This is one of the busiest times for the city of York, when car and coach parking - and even boat mooring spaces – are at a premium, so it makes sense to encourage our visitors to take advantage of the ‘park & raid’ to enjoy all the Festival events without worrying about how much time is left on their parking ticket,” comments JORVIK Viking Centre’s marketing manager, Paul Whiting.

Rachel Benn, Business Delivery Manager at First York, said: “We’re proud to be supporting this historic festival, which is hugely popular in York. We’ve extended the running of the number 2 park & ride service from Rawcliffe Bar Park & Ride so that festival goers have the opportunity to see this year’s finale – and we’d ask any customers with questions about the service to get in touch.”
