News release - Issued by The Royal York Hotel

A New Year, a New Look at The Royal York Hotel, York

One of the UK’s best-known hotels, The Royal York Hotel, which occupies a heritage building in the heart of York – has ushered in 2016 with a complete refurbishment. The new interior designs restore the hotel to its former glory whilst providing all of the comforts and convenience that come with modern travel and hospitality.

The imposing Royal York Hotel – right next to the train station – has been transformed, with 167 beautifully appointed bedrooms and suites (above top left; design by Goddard Littlefair) with views across the hotel’s manicured gardens to York Minster, a new restaurant called The Refectory (above bottom left; design Michaelis Boyd) as well as Chapter House bar (above bottom right) and the Garden Room (above top right) for afternoon tea and Champagne cocktails. Dating back to 1878, the hotel blends the grandeur of late-Victorian architecture with modern comforts, including fast, free wi-fi, smart televisions and Neal’s Yard bathroom toiletries.

The Refectory and Chapter House have been developed in partnership with London restaurateur Des McDonald, whose CV includes The Ivy, Scott’s, Dean Street Townhouse, Holborn Dining Room and Vintage Salt. Working with Executive Chef Nick Evans, Des has created menus that burst with seasonal, local flavour such as Yorkshire Moor Smoked Wood Pigeon, Waterford Farm Rib Eye and Whitby Slip Soles.

The multi-million pound investment in this “grande dame” hotel provides a glimpse of what to expect from the new, city-centre luxury hotel company that owners Starwood Capital will launch in the UK later this year. “ The Royal York Hotel is an iconic hotel that have been given a fresh breath of life,” commented David Taylor, COO of the new hotel company. “We are thrilled to see the results of the investment and are excited about creating new destination hotels, restaurants and bars in cities across the UK."

Offering a warm welcome, local character and an enhanced guest experience across every part of the property, The Royal York Hotel looks forward to welcoming regular guests and newcomers alike to enjoy all it has to offer.
