News Release - Issued by Be Independent

Be Independent Help Make York More Accessible

To celebrate this year’s Disabled Awareness Day (12 July) York-based Be Independent is launching its holiday accommodation offer in a bid to make York a more accessible place to stay.

Be Independent loans assisted living aids to allow people to maintain their independence as well as providing a 24/7 telecare warden call service to residents.

Be Independent has started working with accommodation providers in York to install specialist equipment in hotels, self-catering facilities and B&Bs to enable more people living with a disability the opportunity to enjoy a break away from home.

A person who has specialist equipment at home might be anxious about staying away from home without that equipment. Be Independent hopes that their “accessible York” programme will remove that anxiety, allowing anyone to have the required aids in any setting. That could very well mean the difference between feeling able to have a holiday or not. Customers will be able to stay in accommodation in York and feel as independently able as they do at home. The equipment Be Independent provides can transform almost any room into a disabled or accessible room.

Be Independent is able to provide equipment including toilet frames, raised toilet seats, perching stools for use in the bathroom or shower and even a mobile hoist.

Be Independent’s Chief Executive, Heather Barden said: “At Be Independent our mission is to promote lifelong independence. We do this by offering a high quality and sustainable telecare service and life enhancing equipment solutions that allow people to manage their lives and stay independent in their own homes. We now are able to extend our services so that visitors to York may be confident that living while on holiday will be as easy and comfortable as it is at home. We hope this will allow more people to visit York making the city a more accessible place to visit and stay.”
