News Release - Issued by The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

Experience the thrill of mainline speed

14 – 15 & 21 – 22 March 2015

The world’s most popular heritage railway is pleased to announce the running of North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) services to Battersby along the scenic Esk Valley Line over the next two weekends on the 14, 15, 21, and 22 March.

Following the celebration event held during the previous weekend to commemorate the 50th Anniversary Closure of the line in 1965 under the infamous ‘Beeching Axe’ the NYMR are delighted to run services from Whitby to Battersby on these weekends.

Normally only available during the NYMR’s Steam and Diesel Galas, running to Battersby gives passengers the chance to travel on-board both the heritage line through the North York Moors, and the Esk Valley Line calling at Battersby, Danby, Glaisdale, Grosmont and Whitby Stations. It is hoped that visiting locomotives K1 62005 and K4 61994 ‘The Great Marquess’ will be operating the services on the 14 March, along with the home fleet of 45428 Eric Treacy and 76079 over the two weekends.

Danielle Ramsey, marketing manager explains “We are really lucky to be one of the only standard gauge heritage railways in the UK to offer this main line experience. Visitors will be able to travel at speeds of up to 45mph behind a steam locomotive, this is something that is purely unique to the NYMR and a day out not to be missed.”

Visitors wishing to travel on this exciting Esk Valley experience will need to hop on-board at either Grosmont or Whitby Stations to travel on this fast paced route along the main line, where they will encounter speeds of up to 45 mph.

The services on Saturday 14 and 21 March commence at 10.45 from Whitby and 11.05 from Grosmont. On Sunday 15 and 22 March they commence at 10.45 from Whitby and 11.07 from Grosmont.
