York based Love Cheese, a unique fine cheese and wine store and café, raised £220 for York Against Cancer at their recent Open Day. The Open Day, which hosted over 150 people, was in celebration of the opening of their new café and garden. The money was raised through a sweepstake for a wheel of cheese and 10% of the day’s takings to reach the total of £220.
York Against Cancer is a cause which is very close to the hearts of owners, Harry and Phoebe Baines, as Harry himself has survived two battles with cancer. He said: “I am delighted to be able to donate £220 to York Against Cancer after what was a very successful Open Day. We are a local business, serving and working with local people so we wanted to do something for a charity which also focusses its efforts locally. Having seen first-hand the great work that the York Against Cancer does, it’s great to be able to contribute to their fundraising.”
Julie Russell, General Manager of York Against Cancer said: “We are very grateful to Love Cheese for their very kind donation. I visited the Open Day myself and very much enjoyed spending time in their new courtyard garden. As a local charity we rely heavily on the support of the local businesses, and of course their customers, and we are thankful for the awareness that they generate for the charity.”
Based on Gillygate, Love Cheese has undergone extensive refurbishment and development since the Baines family took over in September 2015. As well as improving the shop layout and installing a bar, the couple have reopened the 22 seat café and opened up a courtyard garden to the rear of the shop to offer an alternative al fresco dining experience for their customers.
Love Cheese currently stocks over 100 different types of cheese, many of which are sourced locally from artisan cheese makers such as The Swaledale Cheese Company and Ribblesdale Cheese. Working with local suppliers is at the heart of Love Cheese and they are continually looking to bring new local producers on board. The café menu is continuing to expand with cheeseboards and a range of accompaniments now available as well as a selection of handpicked wines and craft ales. The new space now also offers the opportunity to host private events such as wine and cheese tasting evenings.
