News release - Issued by National Trust

A brand new play area opens for the summer holidays at National Trust property, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal.

The new play area at this World Heritage Site near Ripon, North Yorkshire, is twice the size of the previous playground. Made by Flights of Fantasy, the custom built design includes a mini wooden abbey – resembling Fountains Abbey itself.

Built from sustainable timber and hand-spliced ropes, the ‘playscape’ has been designed to blend in with the landscape and woods around so that children can hop, skip and jump from one end to the other underneath the shade of the trees.

Situated close to the visitor centre, there’s plenty of play for all ages and abilities, the play area includes sensory equipment such as chimes, a ball roll and skittles, and an accessible swing and roundabout.

Little dare devils can clamber and climb on a gigantic 8 metre rope bridge and whizz along a 31 metre zipwire. There’s scramble nets and posts, swings, fireman’s poles, a woodland house, a slide and a wobbly bridge too.

Jennifer Taylor, Visitor experience manager at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal said, ‘The whole ‘playscape’ is entirely new and it’s been great to see it taking shape over the last few weeks. It’s totally transformed the area and its lovely how it fits in around the woodland. It’s going to be fantastic to see children playing and having fun on it over the summer holidays.’

The adventure doesn’t stop there either! Families can check off lots of ‘50 things to do before you’re 11 and ¾’ activities with pond dipping (Friday 5 August), tracking for wild deer (Tuesday 23 August), and den building (every day). Even more ‘50 things’ adventures can be discovered with the summer explorer map. This summer holiday essential can be used to find the best nature spots on the estate – get bird watching, explore inside a tree and go on a barefoot walk.

Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal is open daily 10am – 6pm (last admission 5pm), and is free to National Trust members so families can play all holiday long.
