News release - Issued by The Art Market York
The north’s largest and most diverse buyers’ art and contemporary craft show, The Art Market, is coming to York on 30th September to 2nd October. Following the success of last year’s event, the 2016 Art Market held at York Racecourse has grown yet again, giving visitors the opportunity to view art from more than 100 selected artists whose work includes paintings, prints, sculptures, ceramics, glass and other contemporary crafts. Visitors can also meet the artists, enjoy talks, demonstrations, installations, join in with interactive areas and workshops, and relax with live music and a café area. The Art Market is one of the country’s premier art shows and a perfect way to browse, buy or commission art on any day across one inspirational weekend.
The Art Market team has been running arts events in the north of England for 9 years, and the 2016 show is set to welcome more artists and visitors than ever before. The team behind this leading art show include Brendan Hesmondhalgh, the sculptor who creates some of the largest ceramic sculptures in the UK, and fellow artists Victoria Robinson and Emily Stubbs, whose blend of business acumen and creativity have enabled The Art Market to attract some of the best artists in the country and incentivise such a diverse selection of artists and works for their visitors.
Victoria says: “The Art Market originated in Holmfirth 9 years ago. Two years ago, we decided to bring the concept to York, thanks to an overwhelming response from artists and visitors. The Art Market has evolved in York to include a broad range of disciplines and gives us an opportunity to showcase emerging artists in York through our RAW project. We’re looking forward to the show immensely and welcoming new and existing visitors to York Racecourse for three days of the best of the best, appealing to all tastes and budgets.”
One of The Art Market’s previous emerging artists was Freya Stockford, whose work from the Graduation Show at Glasgow’s School of Art caught the eye of the Art Market team in 2015. Now on a residency in New York and selling globally, Freya is reaping the rewards of her involvement in The Art Market, as are her Art Market buyers.
Freya says: “I was lucky enough to have been awarded a free space at The Art Market York 2015 with the RAW Graduate Mentoring Programme, and with the support of their mentoring and advice, I’m excited to say that I sold my work for the first time in my home county of Yorkshire. I was also very excited to win Best Newcomer which was awarded by Greg McGee from the According to McGee Gallery which gave me a great boost of confidence.”
This year The Art Market team relish the chance to show and sell more new work alongside art created by some of the country’s most acclaimed and innovative artists, with names such as ceramic artists David Roberts and Tony Laverick, kinetic sculptor Jim Bond, wirework artist Helaina Sharpley, fairy-maker Samantha Bryan, abstract painter Andy Fullalove and more. The artists and designer-makers at The Art Market York have works that are regularly shown in galleries and seen in homes across the UK and beyond.
Tickets cost £6.50 adult, £5.50 concessions and supervised children under 14 are free. Ticket offers are available by registering at www.artmarkets.co.uk/york.
