News Release - Issued by Yorkshire Air Museum
The first of a series of events commissioned by the Yorkshire Air Museum for York’s “Be Part of It” Tour de France Cultural Festival will open to the public on Saturday 28th June at the Keregan Room of York Theatre Royal until Sunday 6th July.
“Maintenant” is a soundscape that captures 100 sounds of Paris and 100 sounds of York, gathered by award winning artist Lee Lewis, who has exhibited her work not only London and around the UK, but also in Paris, Sophia in Bulgaria and exotically, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Based in Shrewsbury, she has worked in sound for 12 years, but also works in other artistic media including paint, performance, sculpture and printmaking, always seeking to challenge concepts.
As Lee Lewis explains: “The sounds have been collected over repeated journey’s to York and Paris, again and again. I had to be sympathetic to the space “Maintenant” was going to be installed, in a vaulted room at York’s Theatre Royal, and aware of the historical links of York and France during WWII. You will hear sounds recorded in my hotel rooms, flicking through TV channels, the Boulevards, sirens, cafés, railway stations, sounds from the Yorkshire Air Museum itself, the streets in York around the theatre and squealing brakes. Hundreds of different things have been recorded on my journey to paint a picture with sound. “Maintenant” was made for Le Tour De France Grand Départ 2014 but can be broadcast anywhere. Where do you come in .. it will not matter if you miss the start, because it runs on a loop. I include maps of my route – see if you can hear where I recorded each piece and place yourself in the picture. You are here. Now! Maintenant!”
This creative work will set York buzzing at the start of a week of celebration as York welcomes the world.
Attached are images of York and Paris and the maps used to accompany the work.
