News Release - Issued by City of York Council

York: Be part of it HLGBT arts collaboration at Monroe’s

Film, music, and dance are among the events promoting heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and transsexual (HLGBTT) performance as part of the diverse York: Be part of it programme, the world’s first festival of arts and culture leading up to the Tour de France.

From 23 April to 21 May 2014, shows will be staged at Monroe’s showbar in Gillygate every Tuesday and Wednesday between 10.30am and 1pm. The programme is fast taking shape and will include weekly events ranging from theatre, poetry, spoken word and art installations to raise a wider awareness of the HLGBTT community by showcasing some of the finest artists in York.

Among the programme will be artist and photographer Jayro Montesinos performing on Wednesday 23 April 2014 and filmmaker Adrian Perez will be presenting his works on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 of April.

Mei Wilshire, Senior Producer of HLGBTT Performing Arts York, said: “Our mission is to create social harmony and integration through the performing arts in York. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of contemporary performing arts by organising regular performances to showcase the very best talent around regardless of the performers' and their contents' orientation. The performances are 100 percent for everyone and with any luck will introduce you to new and interesting art.”

Councillor Sonja Crisp, Cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “I’m passionate about equalities and celebrating our diverse communities in York, and the rich cultural vein of this collaboration between Monroe’s and York’s HLGBT community adds to the breadth of quality arts events featuring in York: Be part of it.”
