News Release - Issued by York Minster

Calling all MysteryMakers

Have you got what it takes to be a York Minster MysteryMaker in 2016?
The cathedral is now recruiting an army of backstage volunteers for the crew which will put the York Minster Mystery Plays on stage next summer.

From prop makers to wardrobe assistants and backstage crew, there’s a variety of roles available for people interested in helping bring to life the city’s most famous stories in its most iconic building.

“Our volunteer MysteryMakers will be the people who make the production happen - without them, we won’t have a show,” explains Joan Humphreys, Production Manager for the York Minster Mystery Plays 2016.

“This is a great opportunity to be part of a fantastic event for the city and a huge celebration of the region’s cultural heritage. We’re looking for people with a variety of skills, experience and time, so there are lots of different options for people to get involved, whatever their background.”

Key roles include the opportunity to be a Community Assistant Director or Community Assistant Designer, who will help run rehearsals, manage the cast or crew and help create the artistic vision.

Other roles being recruited include design assistants, wardrobe staff - including hat makers and shoppers - builders, painters and sculptors to help create the set and props, and mask and furniture makers.
For the five week performance period, the team will also need costume dressers, wardrobe maintenance, hair and make-up assistants and general crew.

For full details of the roles available and to apply, visit before Wednesday 30 September. For further information, contact Joan at or on 07469 088720.

The Mystery Plays open at York Minster on Thursday 26 May and run for five weeks until Thursday 30 June. It’s the first time in 16 years – and only the second time in their history – that the famous Plays have been staged at the Minster.

As well as volunteers, the production team is currently recruiting a community cast for a variety of roles, from key parts like Adam and Eve, Satan and Noah to supporting roles.

Briefing events are taking place throughout September for those interested in getting involved.
