The York Pass

Once purchased, the York Pass, allows free entrance into more than 30 visitor attractions plus lots of other benefits. The groundbreaking Pass is the first of its type for York and offers unlimited access over one, two or three days. Prices start at £21 for a one-day adult pass, and represent considerable savings and convenience for visitors to the city. The York Pass comes complete with a 72 page trilingual (English, French & German) guidebook with maps. Transport

If driving, the cheapest place to park is in one of the several park and rides around the city. Parking is free and bus fares low. Experience the longest medieval town walls in England

One of the best ways to enjoy York is to walk around the city walls. At 3.4 kilometres long, the beautifully preserved walls are the longest town walls in England. About 2.5 million people walk along all or part of the City walls each year, enjoying some amazing views. The completion of the entire circuit will take approximately 2 hours. There are five main bars or gateways, one Victorian gateway, one postern (a small gateway) and 45 towers. The walls weigh approximately 100,000 metric tonnes. National Railway Museum

The National Railway Museum is home to a wide range of railway icons and millions of artefacts. The Museum is only the fourth British Institution to win the prestigious European title in the 24-year history of the competition, adding a new international dimension to a string of national accolades, including Museum of the Year (1991) and Visitor Attraction of the Year (1999). Fairfax House

A stunning 18th century house with outstanding Georgian furniture, ‘one of the best historic house museums in England’… The best time to visit is Fridays when there are two free hour-long guided tours at 11am and 2pm. York Minster

A visit to York would be incomplete without a visit to York Minster. York's Minster is renowned all around the world and is the largest medieval gothic cathedral in northern Europe. This is religious architecture on the very grandest scale: over 500 feet in length, 100 feet wide and with a central tower 200 feet high. The cathedral took over 250 years to complete and is the most visited cathedral in Britain. The Minster contains some of the country's oldest and finest stained glass, the best view of the city is from the Tower. The Undercroft is rich in historical artefacts, dating back to the Roman age. Free entrance for non-commercial visitors, though a donation of £3.00 is requested. Please note a small charge applies for the Tower, the Undercroft and the Chapter House. Guided walking tours - Association of Voluntary Guides

Free city walking tours leave every day at 10.15, 14.15 and 19.00 (evening walks August & September only) in the summer from outside the York City Art Gallery, Exhibition Square. Tours run mornings only during the winter. No need to book – just turn up. This service is run by the Association of Voluntary Guides. The city walks are free.
