York City Art Gallery Exhibition Square Tel: 01904 687687 www.yorkartgallery.org.uk The gallery’s exhibitions show 600 years of art, including European paintings and artists such as Belloto, Reynolds and Lowry. Well worth a visit on any visitor’s itinerary, the gallery contains a marvellous variety of work spanning seven centuries. In 1999 it was the victim of an armed raid, and priceless works, including ‘Rievaulx Abbey’ by Turner, were stolen. All were later recovered, and you can once again view the paintings of Parmigianino, Bellotto, Levy, Frith, Boudin, Lowry, Nash and Etty – as well as countless others! There is also a fine collection of 20th century pottery, and regular visiting exhibitions by modern artists. The gallery has an excellent shop selling prints of many of the most popular paintings.

The shop has gone from strength to strength offering what is sometimes seen as a unique service, helping visitors to trace the heraldic design of their family name. Once this has been researched, the design is then produced by hand on a variety of products that are popular with visitors from all over the world.
