Before getting married

In order to marry in a register office, approved venue or registered religious building other than the Church of England, you must, by law, undergo certain preliminaries.

Giving Notice of Your Intention to Marry

Both of you must give notice of your intention to marry, in person, at the District Registry Office in which you live.

Please note:

1) You must both have lived a minimum of 7 days in a Registration District in England or Wales immediately before giving notice at that office.

2) You must both be British citizens or a national of a country in the European Economic area or Switzerland. If you are not, please contact us for assistance.

3) Both of you must attend to give notice and this should be done by making an appointment to attend at the same time. If this is at the York Registry Office, please call us on 01904 654477 to make an appointment.

4) Notice cannot be given on behalf of a person, or by post, phone, fax, or email.

This is a procedure that does not apply to Church of England weddings

Documents you will need

When giving notice, you must provide your registrar with proof of identity. Please be prepared to show:

1) A current valid passport (or where appropriate, a Home Office Travel Document, a standard acknowledgement letter, or a National Identity Card). If you cannot provide a passport, a full birth certificate will be required - and please ask for further advice.

2)  Proof of current address:

  • Utility bill
  • Driving licence
  • Bank or building society statement
  • Medical card

3) For people who have been married before or formed a civil partnership: Decree Absolute or Death Certificate or Dissolution of Civil Partnership.

4)For people who have legally changed their name: documentary evidence in the form of a Deed Poll or Declaration

In the case of any queries regarding foreign documents, please contact this office. All documents should be certified or sealed. (Photostat copies are not acceptable.)

Parties to a marriage or civil partnership who are under 18 years of age should contact this office in advance of their notice to ensure that they can provide the correct documentation.

Please Note
The information provided in this section does not constitute a complete statement of the law.
It must be stressed that the marriage cannot go ahead unless the legal formalities have been completed.
A provisional booking is simply that,
and does not guarantee that the marriage will go ahead until the legal notice of intention is given.
Notices cannot be given on behalf of a person, or by post, phone, email or fax.
If you have any questions about getting married, please contact York Registry Office on 01904 654477.
