York Art Gallery Displays Colonial Dress - 26/07/2011
The York Art Gallery is currently showing a very special dress with worldwide appeal.
The unique Colonial Dress is on display at the top York attraction and shows the former colonies of Britain through a series of world maps held together with wire and mesh glue.
The 1880s style dress was created by artist and designer Susan Stockwell in 2008 and aims to highlight the important roles that women played during colonial times.
Susan has previously had her art displayed in the city at York St Mary's, where her flood installation was on display.
The York Art Gallery has a wonderful series of pieces and exhibitions on display including Honest Pots: an exhibition of handmade English pottery, the art of York born William Etty and sculptures from Austin Wright.
