See the Mallard at the National Railway Museum in York - 25/07/2011
York is famous for many things its Roman Heritage, Chocolate and Trains to name just a few of the things that draw day visitors and tourists to the beautiful city. York is home to the "National Railway Museum" is in York, it was opened in 1976 at Leeman Road.
Today the National Railway Museum is one of Britain's busiest museums and is probably the most popular railway museum in the world, because of its heritage and vast display of all things relating to railway including locomotives, rolling stock, memorabilia, Art and things found in the railway industry over the years. The museum holds nearly 300 rail vehicles in the National Collection from a bygone era, so for people of all ages this is a place to see a lot of historical railway history in one place.
Currently those staying in York accommodation can see the amazing world record breaking "Mallard" Steam Locomotive which is still the holder of the official world speed record for steam locomotives at 125.88 mph. The "Mallard" can been seen daily until September up close and personal on the Turntable in the Great Hall, you can get up and step inside the driver's cab, learn how Mallard broke the world speed record for steam traction on rail. The Mallard is visiting the National Railway Museum in York for limited period during this summer.
