Ghosts and Ghouls

York claims to be Europe’s most haunted city and, for those who dare, taking a trip back into York’s murky past is a must.

The most horrible place to start is of course York Dungeon, Live actors lead you through this ghastly experience full of torture, plague, massacres, executions and death which will haunt you forever.

If you can handle any more ghostly experiences, visit the Ghost Cellar at Treasurer’s House. It was in this famous haunted cellar that a young plumber sighted a legion of Roman soldiers only visable from the knees upwards.

Stop for lunch at one of York’s many haunted pubs before walking the city walls. Make sure you visit Micklegate Bar Museum, it was on this bar where the heads of ‘traitors’ were displayed to deter rebellion.

Further round the walls, you will find the Richard III Museum in which you can decide the truth about him, was he an evil monster guilty of committing numerous brutal murders or is he simply the innocent victim of Tudor propaganda?

For those who dare, try an evening Ghost Walk and join one of the many tours starting at various locations in York between 7:30 and 8:00. You will be escorted around the narrow ginnels and snickleways of York, delving deep into the tales of one of Europe’s most haunted cities.

During the summer months, you can also board a ghost cruise on Yorkboat The cruise lasts for one hour and a costumed storyteller will thrill and entertain you.
