Evenings & Entertainment

Evenings in York have never been dull. The Romans feasted and gambled, the Vikings told sagas of gods and played music. In the Middle Ages, the streets became a stage as actors presented medieval plays on wagons, and the Georgians introduced a new social sophistication to York building the Theatre Royal and hosting lavish dinner parties in their smart town house.

Today, although the entertainment has moved with the times, York is as lively as ever in the evenings. With tours, theatres, cinemas and bars galore, you will not be short of things to do once the day’s sightseeing is over.

The city offers a plethora of Places to Eat and Drink, so why not take advantage of an early bird restaurant offer followed by your choice of entertainment.

York’s three theatres offer a wide range of plays to suit every taste and age group. York Theatre Royal and the Grand Opera House host performances all year round and has attracted stars of stage and screen for many years. Friargate Theatre is York’s most intimate theatrical venue and is the permanent home of the Riding Lights Theatre Company. Productions range from Shakespeare to original musicals.

Just outside the city centre, the Vue cinema complex offers a wide variety of the latest blockbuster movies in comfortable surroundings. Or if art-house films are more your thing, City Screen in the city centre offers an excellent array of films ranging from big box office hits to off-beat art house films.

For those who dare, try an evening Ghost Walk and join one of the many tours starting at various locations in York between 7:30 and 8:00. You will be escorted around the narrow ginnels and snickleways of York, delving deep into the tales of one of Europe’s most haunted cities.

If you don’t fancy walking – hop aboard a Yorkboat for a ghost cruise or a floodlit evening cruise and simply sit back and relax.

To round off the evening, there is a superb range of pubs and bars to frequent until the early hours of the morning.
