Details

It’s been 30 years since JORVIK Viking Centre first opened its doors. Now, as part of the celebration of our 30th anniversary, we are going back to where it all started; to the Coppergate Dig, and the artefacts that were discovered.

This summer, Coppergate Alive! explores some of the interesting Viking finds that were discovered underneath the modern city. Learn what they taught us about the Vikings, and how they helped shape the JORVIK Viking Centre.

From coin dies, which influenced the Viking coin strike we have today, to surprising objects such as wooden bowls and cups, which gave us the name Koppari-gata (Coppergate), or “Street of the cup makers”.

Our archaeological experts will be on hand every day, handling artefacts from the dig, showing how they were used in every day Viking life and how they influenced how we live today.

Not only that, but a brand new app has been made exclusively for Coppergate Alive! Now you can use your smartphone to scan QR codes and learn more about the Viking objects that have survived nearly 1000 years.

For younger historians, the Discover Coppergate App shows just how similar the Vikings were to us, and how they lived much like we do today.
