For many centuries there was a fortified medieval bridge on this spot. Outside this stretch of wall lies an area still called Jewbury, which was occupied in medieval times by the Jewish community after they were expelled from the city in 1290.

Just after the medieval Merchant Taylor's Hall, look down to your left. Can you see a small square tower and the top of a curving wall? This is the south-east corner of the Roman fortress. Keep an eye out for the medieval urinal.
