The
Red Tower was built in 1490 by order of Henry VII. Controversially, the
job of building the tower was given to the bricklayers rather than the
stonemasons who resented this greatly. A bitter feud broke out, which
led to the murder of a bricklayer and the trial, for murder, of the wardens
of the Masons' Guild. Only the top two thirds of the Tower are now visible
above ground.
From Red Tower, walk
along the main road for five minutes to meet the next stretch of wall, which
begins at Layerthorpe Bridge.
