Davy Tower is named after John Davy who lived there during the 1420s. A chain could be slung between Davy Tower and the now vanished Hyngbrig Tower on the other side of the river, designed to protect the city from invaders. The chain was removed in 1553 and the tower was allegedly used as a brothel during the seventeenth century. The elegant residential terrace on Tower Place, overlooking the gardens was built in the 1820s.
