St Helen’s Church was the parish church of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers many of whom lived on Stonegate. These are the men who filled church windows of York with vibrant life and colour from 1150 up to the present day. Making a stained glass window was a complex process. Designs were sketched out on a whitewashed table and the lead lines marking out important parts of the design were sketched in. Coloured glass was created using metallic oxides, then the surface detail was painted on. Finally the various pieces were joined using soft lead strip, and soldered onto the supporting bars of the window.
