Walk down Stonegate passing number 50 – the site of the shop of Thomas Cooke, York’s internationally renowned Telescope Maker. In 1837 Cooke established his optical business here. One of Cooke’s greatest achievements was the 25 inch 'Newall' refractor, the largest in the world at the time. Continuing down Stonegate look out for the Red Devil on the left at the entrance to Coffee Yard. This was the symbol for a printers and there was a printing shop in Coffee Yard for over 100 years. In 1647 Thomas Broad printed a petition from here, asking for a university in York.
