Scarborough Bridge was financed by George Hudson to carry his railway line to Scarborough. The bridge crosses the River Ouse which throughout York’s history has been a threat. In 2000 the Ouse reached a record height of 5.3 metres above its normal level. Technology has provided the City with innovative and effective ways to defend itself from damaging flooding. Flood defences are tailored to different points along the River and near Scarborough Bridge these consist of earthern floodbanks and concrete flood walls.
