1. Bootham Bar is one of York's four medieval city gates, but it stands on the site of one of the main gates of the Roman fortress (porta principalis dextra). A visitor in Roman times looking out of the gate would have seen a great straight road, now followed by modern Bootham, heading north-west and eventually going as far as Hadrian's Wall. On either side of the road lay Roman cemeteries with their splendid tombstones and grand mausoleums.
