As we go through Micklegate Bar into the walled city, there is a lane leading left to Toft Green. Here, in the early hours before dawn, the wagons were marshalled into their proper order; no doubt with shouting, jostling and desperate final preparations. Then the wagons would emerge onto Micklegate and be pushed to station 1 at the gate of Holy Trinity Priory, where the actors performed their play – the first of twelve times!
