VisitYork4Meetings confirms the return of the Liberal Democrat Conference for Spring 2016

VisitYork4Meetings, the business tourism brand of Make It York, is delighted to announce it has secured the return of the Liberal Democrat Conference to York in spring 2016. The three day conference will be held 11- 13 March 2016 at York Barbican Centre with the Novotel and Hilton used as the party conference headquarters for the duration of the event.

VisitYork4Meetings bid against other Northern destinations to host the 2016 Spring conference and this successful outcome builds on the city’s history of first hosting the event in March 2014. Other previous host destinations include Liverpool, Glasgow and Brighton.

The conference is expected to bring over 2000 delegates to York over the 3 days and VisitYork4meetings estimates the economic value to the city will be in the region of £600k

Tim Farron Leader of the Liberal Democrats:

“We have an extra 20,000 party members since Polling Day and many will be joining us in York for Spring Conference. York has always provided a fantastic welcome to us, it is a great city and very well located for our members from right across the UK. I am really looking forward to returning there in March.”

Andrew Sharp Head of Business at Make It York:

“We are seeing increased interest in York from across the UK and oversees as the ideal location to host a conference. The strongest evidence of York’s appeal for conferences is returning visits, so winning this bid to host the Liberal Democrats conference for the second time is a fantastic endorsement for all that York has to offer for business visitors.’

With over 16,000 meetings, conferences and events taking place in York every year, business tourism generated £140.7 million in income for the city in 2014 which represented 25% of total visitor spend. There are currently new streams of investment and new developments underway at a number of venues that will expand York’s conference and meetings portfolio as well as offering new historic and unusual venues. Projects include the addition of Hotel Indigo, a new boutique hotel and developments at The Grand Hotel & Spa, The Royal York Hotel, York Art Gallery and The Bar Convent Living Heritage Centre.
