Details

This year’s programme is:

· 29 July – James Lancelot, Master of the Choristers and Organist of Durham Cathedral

· 5 August - Benjamin Morris, Assistant Director of Music, York Minster

· 12 August - John Scott Whiteley, Organist Emeritus of York Minster

· 19 August – Jeremy Lloyd, Assisting Organist, York Minster

· 26 August – Robert Sharpe, Director of Music at York Minster.

Robert Sharpe, Director of Music at York Minster, explained:

“The Summer Organ Recitals provide a unique opportunity to experience the Minster’s organ in the evening, when the building is quiet and listeners can enjoy the atmospheric surroundings and the magnificent sound of the instrument being used to its full potential by acclaimed musicians. We are particularly pleased this year to be honouring the 100th birthday of my predecessor but one in post at the Minster, Dr Francis Jackson, who is the doyen of cathedral organists.”

Robert added that this year’s series of organ recitals will be the last formal series until 2020 as the Minster embarks on a once-in-a-century landmark project to restore the Grand Organ. Robert said:

“Music is part of York Minster’s core mission with the organ and the choir central to our music-making within the context of daily worship. The organ is, for many the most glorious of musical instruments – but it is also an extremely complicated and complex mechanism and all mechanisms eventually require comprehensive restoration or renewal.

“The last major mechanical renewal of the York Minster Organ was in 1903. So in the later part of 2018 we will begin a major project to rebuild and restore the Grand Organ. This project will start in the autumn of 2018 and reinstallation will begin in April 2020. This autumn, the York Minster Fund will launch the fundraising appeal for the restoration work and we hope lovers of organ music will really get behind this project.”

Robert added that the absence of the organ will not stop the music at York Minster. He said:

“We are already planning an innovative and exciting programme of music during the rebuilding. A grand piano will be used alongside the existing chamber organ in the Quire and a digital organ will be used in the Nave. There will be no gaps in our output - music will continue to fill the Minster’s spaces as it has for more than a millennium. In addition, we will present music before and after services during this period which would not normally be heard in the Minster, including keyboard works by Beethoven, Mozart and Bach.”

The Summer Organ Recitals are part of a busy year of music at York Minster. In November, Sir Mark Elder will conduct the Hallé Orchestra in the Ryedale Festival’s production of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and the Advent and Christmas season will feature some of the Minster’s most popular musical events including the Christmas Carol Concerts and a performance of Handel’s Messiah, alongside the daily Evensongs and weekend services which attract large congregations.
