LITTLE VIKINGS

Jorvik: Life and Death

Jorvik: Life and Death

Details

Located on the site of the medieval St Leonard’s Hospital, now home to the newly-refurbished York Theatre Royal, this intriguing exhibition explores the practices of those involved in providing care and remedies in the Viking period and the years that followed.

Artefacts and human remains from JORVIK reveal details about sanitation and health in the Viking city of Jorvik. With cesspits for toilets, residents would have been susceptible to all manner of diseases and parasites, with human waste uncovered by archaeologists giving us a fascinating insight into the lives of the Vikings and the things that were living in them!

Walking:
Turn left from the main entrance of the station and continue past the Royal York Hotel, straight over the cross roads. Follow the road under the city walls, then turn left and over Lendal Bridge. You will see the Minster in front of you as you pass the York Museum Gardens on the left. At the crossroads turn left and York Theatre Royal is in front of you on the right hand side of the road. The De Grey Rooms is immediately adjacent.

Driving:
The theatre is approximately 40 minutes' drive from Harrogate, 45 minutes from Leeds (city centre), 1hr from Hull and 30 minutes from junction 45 of the A1(M). There are a number of car parks close to the theatre, but space can be limited so please allow enough time to park and walk in. The city centre car parks can be expensive, so you may want to use York's Park & Ride scheme for a day visit.
