An hour from York - the 17th century house where James Cook lodged as apprentice seaman to Whitby shipmaster Captain John Walker.

Rich collection of exhibits about Yorkshire's most famous son. Includes period rooms in meticulously restored house, ship models, plans and manuscripts, artefacts from the voyages, and fine original paintings, drawings and prints.

Stunning site on harbourside. An easy day out from York by car. Beautiful drive. Ancient seaport town.

Visit includes our special exhibition 2016 'Wives and Sweethearts, the Sailor's Farewell'.

Allow 2 hours for your visit. Introductory session about Cook, Whitby, his ships, and his discoveries, by an experienced guide. Schools visits tailored to age group and curriculum. All Group Visits pre-booked through our Operations Manager, Maria Aparicio.

Opening details

Whitby’s Captain Cook Museum will be closed from the 6th November until Saturday 18 February. However all is not lost! We do open the Museum during the winter for pre-arranged visits. Expect from 20th December to 4th January.

If you have guests who would like to visit, please advise them to ring the Museum and arrange with our Manager a mutually convenient date and time. Ring 01947 601900/ 01527948510. The price for what is effectively a private visit is £7.50 per head.

School & student groups, £3 per pupil. Accompanying teachers & coach drivers free

Entry includes all exhibitions.

    From York, take the A64 & A169 north-east to Whitby.

    From Scarborough, take the A171 north to Whitby.

    From Teesside, take the A171 east to Whitby.

    Follow signs to Park and Ride (best from Teesside or Pickering or park in Town Centre car parks. The museum is on the east side of the swing bridge over the River Esk, take immediate right turn onto Grape Lane. Museum is on the right hand side at the far end.
