Coastival 2017

Coastival 2017

Look beyond the obvious at a two-day festival with a twist. Dance with the Pied Piper, come join the Suitcase Circus, get down to some groovy tracks on Platform 3 and see Scarborough as you’ve never seen it before - with loads of free events and lots of surprises.

One of the major highlights will be the building of Scarborough and all it's iconic buildings in the game of Minecraft. It is a community effort including schools, colleges, community groups and individuals, painstakingly creating a virtual Scarborough in Minecraft and culminating in a huge Minecraft event over the Coastival weekend at the Spa.

You can also expect to see artwork, music and performances in unusual locations as we look to break with people’s expectations of a traditional arts festival.

Sea Swim: Head Above Water, will embody the swimmer’s experience through film, photography, sculpture, drawing and poetry. Dean Road Prison will house Bands Behind Bars while the Old Parcels Office will offer Tracks by the Tracks. There will be opera at Westborough Methodist Church, Pete White will give people the chance to learn circus skills at Coventry University Scarborough Campus and there’s an exciting mix of artists’ Open Studios, plus Rollercoastival – creative stuff for kids, and much, much more.

The unusual settings are all part of Coastival’s desire to bring the arts to different venues for its 2017 festival.

Coastival director Wendy Holroyd said: “You expect to find music and performance at places like the Spa and the Stephen Joseph Theatre and that will still be a big part of Coastival in February.

“But what will make 2017 different will be the unusual places you can go to where lots of exciting and different things are going on.”

‘Bands Behind Bars’ runs from 1pm to 4pm on the Saturday and will feature Frankie Dixon, Rhys Bloodjoy and Jesse Hutchinson performing at the Dean Road prison.

‘Station to Station’, from 6 to 8pm on both Saturday and Sunday will see historic images of Scarborough projected on to the rails of the old cliff lift at the Sea Strand Café, Aquarium Top, along with atmospheric noises of the past.
At the Brunswick Centre on the Saturday, shoppers can enjoy the Global Voices Choir from 2pm to 2.45pm and then the Coastival Choir from 3pm to 3.45pm.

At 9pm on the same day there’ll be music, comedy and performance amongst the market stalls when ‘Market Hall Myriad of Music And Madness’ is held at Scarborough Market Hall.

On the Sunday, ‘A Magical Afternoon Tea’ offers table magic performed alongside traditional refreshments at Phoenix Court, from 1pm to 2pm and 3pm to 4pm.

One of the key features of Coastival 2017 will be an attempt to recreate Scarborough in 3D with the Minecraft game when the festival is held from 18 to 19 February.
And it was against the backdrop of some of the latest images from the Minecraft Scarborough creation process that Coastival launched its 2017 brochure on Saturday.

The venue switches to the Old Parcels’ Office on Sunday afternoon, from 1pm to 4pm, for ‘Tracks by the Tracks’, a series of diverse musical performances from Lazlo, Connor and Nathen and AC3.

Booking for all events will be via from December.
Under the “unexpected” theme, visitors can expect to see artwork, music and performances in unusual locations as Coastival looks to break with people’s expectations of a traditional arts festival. The full programme will be launched in the coming weeks.
