The Great North Art Show

The Great North Art Show features hundreds of artworks displayed in the splendid setting of Ripon Cathedral, North Yorkshire.

This breathtaking array of art, featuring more than 350 artworks, ranges from printmaking and illustration to painting and sculpture, and is an opportunity to view and buy works from both emerging and established artists.

A special highlight of the 2017 exhibition will be a special collection of works by artist Tom Wood, whose paintings are held by HRH The Prince of Wales and The National Portrait Gallery Print Collection. Tom is an acclaimed portrait artist whose sitters include Professor Lord Robert Winston and Alan Bennett, both commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery, London. Wood will be displaying a selection of new paintings at the Great North Art Show.

The Great North Art Show is unique as it allows for a collection of work to be shown by each artist rather than simply an individual piece. The selections for this year’s exhibition reveal a broad range of practice, from closely observed wildlife studies to expressive prints depicting stylized landscapes and vibrant abstract paintings. This year more than 56 artists have been selected who include:
• Andrew Dalton, a Northern printmaker who will be showing a series of black and white prints inspired by both the industrial and rural Northern Landscape created in his studio workshop on a Victorian etching press.
• William Watson West, a designer and painter whose first-hand observations of landscape, flora and fauna are the basis of his work in the areas of both fine and applied art
• Nolon Stacey, a wildlife artist who takes inspiration from living in the Yorkshire Dales and the picturesque surroundings and varied wildlife around him.

This year’s selection was made by Richard Hawkes who runs the Watermark Gallery, Harrogate.

The 2017 Great North Art Show opens on Saturday 2 September and runs until Sunday 24 September. Entry to the Cathedral and exhibition is free and all artworks are for sale.
